Expert Advice

How to Tip Your Wedding Catering & Bar (Without Overpaying)

Catering contracts often have an 18โ€“24% Service Charge. Crucial check: a "Service Charge" is frequently kept by the venue as operating revenue and NOT given to servers as gratuity. Check contract line items.

Important: Check Your Contract Service Charge!

Service charge/gratuity is already paid in contract! Do NOT tip another 18โ€“20% ($1,500+). Instead, give a direct flat cash bonus of $50โ€“$100 to the banquet captain and $30โ€“$50 to each bartender/server for personal recognition.

Common Questions

Wedding Vendor Tipping & Cash FAQ

Everything couples need to know about bank withdrawals, envelopes, and wedding etiquette.

Is a wedding catering service charge the same as a tip?โ†“
No. In most states, an administrative "service charge" goes to company overhead and venue operations, not directly into the servers or bartenders pockets. Always ask your caterer: "Is any portion of the service charge distributed directly as staff gratuity?"
How much should we tip bartenders and banquet captains?โ†“
If gratuity is not included, tip 15%โ€“20% of the food and alcohol total. If gratuity is already factored into your banquet balance, gift a separate cash envelope of $50โ€“$100 to the Banquet Captain and $30โ€“$50 to each bartender at the end of the night.
Should bartenders display a tip jar at a wedding?โ†“
Standard wedding etiquette frowns upon tip jars at hosted bar weddings. Couples should confirm with the bartending vendor that tip jars are prohibited, and provide a fair cash tip envelope instead.
